Rahul Gandhi might take charge of Congress Working President

Congress circles are abuzz with rumor that party president Sonia Gandhi on her return from abroad may delegate more of her powers to her son and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who may take over as working president, Mail Today, a Delhi tabloid reported.

Sonia Gandhi is expected in Delhi in a day or two after a month long stay in New York where she underwent treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

The Mail Today report said that the party rank and file is feeling "rudderless" to counter the Anna Hazare blitz in the absence of Sonia Gandhi, with senior ministers giving conflicting signals on the Lokpal issue.

The report, says there is speculation that Sonia Gandhi may take more time to recuperate. Despite a series of crises which dogged the party during the month of August, the party was yet to convene a single high-level meeting to discuss the drift in her absence.

The party and the government had been adopting a hardline approach towards Anna Hazare, by arresting him from his residence, even before he had sat on fast.

This hardline approach was changed soon after Rahul Gandhi's return from New York, and the party adopted a conciliatory approach towards Team Anna.

The report, party insiders are of the view that Rahul Gandhi should now take over the burden of her mother and boost the sinking morale of the party cadre, with the crucial Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections hovering in view.

Says UP Congress leader Jagdambika Pal: "He is our future leader. He will take over at the right time."

Sonia Gandhi had set up a four-member committee to run the day-to-day affairs of the party, moments before she left for New York, The committee, consisting of A K Antony, Rahul Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, and Janardan Dwivedi, did not have any structured meeting during the whole month.

Several crucial decisions relating to the party organization are still pending. With Rahul Gandhi flying in and out of Delhi to New York to be with her ailing mother, the panel did not play a pro-active role during the Anna crisis, and goofed up by arresting him and then ordering his release the same evening.

Tamil Nadu model is better than Modi’s Gujarat model, Rahul Gandhi says

RAMANATHAPURAM: Lauding the Tamil Nadu model as better than the Gujarat model, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday said he was happy that Congress was fighting the elections alone in Tamil Nadu and hoped the party would capture power in the state in 2016. Addressing a public meeting to seek votes for the party candidate S Thirunavukkarasar at coastal Ramanathapuram district a day before election campaigning comes to an end in the state, Rahul hit out at BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for projecting Gujarat as an ideal state. Rahul heaped praises on Tamil Nadu's development. "Tamil Nadu has shown what Tamil people are capable of. Modi talks about Gujarat model. Maybe, he should come here and take a look at TN model" Rahul said. Rahul said that the country "does not need a government that makes Hindus fight Muslims." "You must ensure that a secular government comes to power at the Centre," he said. "We don...

Lok Sabha polls: Campaign gets personal; Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi attack at each other

NEW DELHI | MUMBAI: Toffee, Tata and Ambedkar entered 2014's campaign lexicon on Monday as Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi intensified what's already become a virtual competition of personal attacks. Adding to this were similar attacks on rivals by other leaders of both parties. Gandhi's targeting of Modi, which resulted in Tatas being named in political attacks for the first time this poll season, seemed more dramatic, as it persists in naming big companies. But so far at least, pundits in finance, marketing and academia don't see such a strategy change delivering major benefits for Congress. Gandhi, continuing his attack on Modi and India Inc, named Tatas in addition to Adani and termed Modi's policies as a 'toffee model'. "You get a toffee at Rs 1, but Modi gave away 44,000 acre at Rs 1 (per) sq m," Gandhi said. "This is not Gujarat model, this is toffee model." On Tatas, Gandhi said, "Tata can get a loan for 20 yea...
