Rahul fields OBC mascot Pitroda in UP

RAMABAI NAGAR (UP): Rahul Gandhi said the country's telecom revolution ushered in by his father Rajiv Gandhi was authored by a "vishwakarma" , Sam Pitroda , introducing the technocrat as a poster boy of "most backward castes" (MBCs) and giving a final thrust to Congress's social engineering plank for Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

In a short speech at a packed MBC rally, Rahul played the 'pride card' for sections struggling to find a place in the OBC monolithic that Congress thinks can help it slay backward champions Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav. Rahul said the cellphones in their hands were powered by a policy promoted by Rajiv Gandhi , but authored by a man (Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda), who is a "vishwakarma" by caste.

"B a d a i h a i n w o h.... You can change the world but have been ignored and so you are backward," he said, stunning observers by his use of mascot and idiom in backward politics.

The burgeoning post-Mandal politics became more a work of mythology with Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram weaving an intricate network with most backward groups.

Post Mandal caste matrix in Uttar Pradesh

The burgeoning post-Mandal politics became more a work of mythology with Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram weaving an intricate network with most backward groups, weaning them away from mainstream parties by evoking pride through use of social reformers like Jyotiba Phule and Shahuji Maharaj.

While no pantheon of MBCs was created, these groups backed BSP because they related more to poor dalits than strong backwards like Yadavs and Kurmis.

The BSP tightened its grip on them by giving them political representation.

But Congress sees MBCs as amenable to its signals in anti-Mayawati environment . The party has increased nomination to MBCs for coming polls, while the Centre has played the 'sub-quota' card to woo them.

The promise of as separate quota within 27% OBC quantum caters to a deepseated gripe that Mandal fruits have been monopolized by 'forwards among backwards' like Yadavs. Law minister Salman Khurshid promised that MBC sub-quota would match their share in OBC population.

If the amplified message in coming weeks pits MBCs against BCs, Congress would be eager to tap the ensuing resentment.

Akbarpur MP Rajaram Pal, who hails from the shepherd community and defected to Congress from BSP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, presided over the rally . Umed Singh, husband of late bandit queen Phoolan Devi, was a prominent face on the dais. Rahul's power dais of Union ministers like Sri Prakash Jaiswal, Khurshid , P L Punia, Jitin Prasada , Vyalar Ravi, and cine star-MP Raj Babbar, tried to portray a collective Congress nod to MBC interests.

Rahul told the gathering , "What is your (MBC) population and what have you got in 22 years? Only big lectures.... But I am your soldier. I will fight your battle wherever you ask me."

Lok Sabha polls: Campaign gets personal; Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi attack at each other

NEW DELHI | MUMBAI: Toffee, Tata and Ambedkar entered 2014's campaign lexicon on Monday as Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi intensified what's already become a virtual competition of personal attacks. Adding to this were similar attacks on rivals by other leaders of both parties. Gandhi's targeting of Modi, which resulted in Tatas being named in political attacks for the first time this poll season, seemed more dramatic, as it persists in naming big companies. But so far at least, pundits in finance, marketing and academia don't see such a strategy change delivering major benefits for Congress. Gandhi, continuing his attack on Modi and India Inc, named Tatas in addition to Adani and termed Modi's policies as a 'toffee model'. "You get a toffee at Rs 1, but Modi gave away 44,000 acre at Rs 1 (per) sq m," Gandhi said. "This is not Gujarat model, this is toffee model." On Tatas, Gandhi said, "Tata can get a loan for 20 yea...

Opposition parties don’t respect women: Rahul Gandhi

TUMKUR: AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi made a strong pitch for women's empowerment at his rally on Sunday, and said it's the only way for the country to become a superpower. Addressing a women's rally at Tumkur, 70km from Bangalore, Rahul said the country today was half a superpower because women had not been given equal status. "India will not become a superpower if women aren't given opportunities. We need equal representation for women at all levels to make them empowered," he told a mammoth gathering. Rahul, who is also co-chairman of the Congress campaign committee for the LS polls, was here on a two-day tour. Chanting the women empowerment mantra, he was critical of his own party. "Men outnumber women at this rally. This is the situation the Congress is facing today. Men are preferred over women while giving tickets for assembly and Lok Sabha elections. This has to change and I want more women to attend rallies and participate in the el...
